ASSIGNMENTS FOR IT 448 CATALOGING - OVERVIEW
Design Thinking Note: The Stanford University Design School 6 step Design Thinking guidelines. You will be provided the DT tutorials to be familiar with the process, theory behind it, and the benefits. In addition, this will also give you the thought process when documenting your design and product for your IT portfolio at SIUE. Refer to Design Thinking page.

1. Subject Guide - (Group project) Select your group (2 groups of 3 students) according to your interest - Subject Guide #1 or Subject Guide #2. Would like to have one group select Subject Guide #1 and the other Subject Guide #2, but I could be convinced to have both groups select the same one. Examples of Subject Guides. Also, we have some students from my Reference Course in which we did a Subject Guide project and they will be an excellent resource for us!!

Choice of Subject Guide Project:


1. Create a Subject Guide For Your School Library Staff on beginning cataloging.
Ideal situation: Interview school librarians (preferably, however, can interview non-school librarians. Also, can use research from successful sites or both.
If you can't interview school librarians the DT comes into play as you become more experts from the research. (Not limited to scholarly resources but emphasis on trade library sites, library websites, blogs, etc.This is a collection of resources of various media - articles - videos - webinars - illustrations - blogs - etc.

2. Create a Subject Guide for students that re-defines Dewey.
(This could be used to educate students to make book selections easier.
Ideal situation:
Interview students and school librarians following DT guidelines. Sometimes ideal is not possible and we will discuss that. If you can't interview students and school librarians the DT comes into play as you become more experts from the research. (Not limited to scholarly resources but emphasis on trade library sites, library websites, blogs, etc. This is a collection of resources of various media - articles - videos - webinars - illustrations - blogs - etc.

In the planning and Design Thinking phase we will use the 5 categories:
1. Empathize 2.Define 2. Ideate 3. Prototype 4.Test.
For more info refer to Design Thinking. The planning for your project can be done on your Blackboard Group section. The final project can be done in MS Word, Powerpoint, websites such as Blogger, Wix, Weebly, WordPress, Classroom Wiki, or others....

2. Field Visit Reflection - (individual Project)
Field Visit Reflection - Visit an academic or public library to observe the cataloging process of entering new material into the library's collection. Write a reflection experience (keep names confidential) and post it on the designated discussion forum. Post a response to another post each post (We have a small class and should respond to each post (6 posts).

3. Cataloging in MARC - (Group Project)

 

4. Participation - (Individual Participation)
Participation within your assigned groups - role playing - group/peer project consulting and critiquing - Design Thinking exercises - Weekly Bb discussion postings from readings. (Bb discussion detailed): On the discussion board, post message by the deadline that is specified in your course schedule. Comment on readings. Your review should be long enough to make your point and to the relevance of the material I've avoided word counts, etc on this.

Make one response to another students posting with your reaction/discussion to the material. Clarify your rationale. The purpose of the discussions is to promote information exchanges and develop content expertise and build a learning community of sharing.
